On August 28, 1979, at approximately 7:10 p.m., Fairbanks police were called to the apartment of John ODonnell in the Northward Building. ODonnell told Officer Donald LaSage that he had been robbed. According to ODonnell, he was returning to his apartment around 6:45 when a man followed him up the elevator and approached him outside his door. The man told ODonnell he had a gun, and kept one hand under his jacket. They entered the apartment, and the man demanded ODonnells money and jewelry. The man ordered ODonnell to remove his leather jacket, which the man eventually traded for the plaid jacket he was wearing. The man searched the drawers of ODonnells dresser, and took several rolls of coins. In addition, he took nearly $500 in currency, another leather coat, a television, a portable radio, ODonnells watch and two rings. Before leaving, the man tied ODonnells hands with a cord pulled from a lamp in the apartment. ODonnell managed to free himself a short time later, and called the police immediately from the lobby of his building.
